Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
FORT WORTH, TX - The Lincoln Saltdogs came up short in their bid to win a road series Thursday, falling 8-3 to the Fort Worth Cats. Lincoln drops to 11-21 on the season.
Fort Worth jumped out early against Lincoln starter Jim Paduch (2-3), scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Pat O'Sullivan highlighted the frame for the Cats with a two-run double. The Cats added a run in the fourth, and although Lincoln got on the board in the fifth on Steve Alexander's RBI single, Fort Worth added two more in the bottom of the fifth and a final tally in the top of the sixth. Lincoln did manage to close the gap in the ninth, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI single by Ernesto Gonzalez and a run-scoring groundout by Phil Hawke.
Lincoln had several chances to score in the contest, but Cats starter Dan Grybash (5-1) kept pitching himself out of trouble. The Saltdogs had a hit in every inning and at least one runner in scoring position in every inning except the eighth. The Dogs, however, left 10 men on base, seven of them in scoring position, and had a runner thrown out at the plate in the third.
Josh Burrus went 3-for-5 with a run scored for Lincoln, extending his hitting streak to ten games. Alexander, Pichi Balet and Matt Maloney each had two hits apiece for the Dogs as well. Nolan Chestnut pitched well in relief of Paduch, tossing the final 3.2 innings and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five.
Lincoln now travels to Pensacola for a three-game weekend series against the Pelicans, with game one set for Friday night at 6:35pm. Righty Jarrett Gardner will get the start for the Saltdogs.
