Sacramento River Cats News Release
TUCSON, Ariz. - One day after tying the franchise-record with 24 hits in a single game, the River Cats were shut out on just four hits by the Tucson Padres by a score of 2-0 at Kino Stadium on Monday night.
Neither team scored until the bottom of the fifth when T-Pad designated hitter Mike Wilson clubbed a leadoff home run to left field. Tucson put its second and final run on the board in the seventh when Tucson third baseman Jesus Merchan singled-home Cody Decker.
The River Cats had a chance to strike late after Grant Green tripled to right field with two outs in the eighth. However, Scott Moore-who was named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week on Monday-struck out swinging to end the threat. Michael Choice then led off the top of the ninth with a single, but the next three batters went down in order, sealing the 2-0 loss.
Lefty Andrew Werner (4-7) was the hard luck loser, holding the Padres to two earned runs on nine hits, no walks and one strikeout in seven innings of work. Mike Ekstrom tossed one scoreless inning of relief to lower his ERA on the year to 4.38. The win was awarded to Tucson starter Robbie Erlin (4-0) who shut out the River Cats over seven innings, allowing just two hits and three walks with 11 strikeouts.
Green, Moore, Choice and Jeremy Barfield were the only River Cats to hit safely in the game. Moore and Green had the team's only extra-base hits-a double and a triple, respectively. Tucson's two runs came on 10 hits, including two doubles and a home run.
The loss snaps Sacramento's four-game winning streak, and prevented the team's fourth four-game series sweep of the season.
The River Cats return home on Toyota Family Value Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. when righty Bruce Billings (5-2, 4.70 ERA) starts opposite Salt Lake City right-hander Matt Shoemaker (3-7, 5.04 ERA) to open a four-game set at Raley Field.
