Cats Beat Blue Anchors

The Border Cats snapped a four-game losing streak Sunday as they came back to beat the Alexandria Blue Anchors 10-7 at Subway Field. The Cats trailed early 5-1, but took a 6-5 lead thanks to a five-run bottom of the 2nd inning. The Cats then rallied from 7-6 down with a three-run 5th inning and added an insurance run in the last of the 8th to improve their first half record to 12-20.

Caleb Smith (Rice University) started for Thunder Bay, but departed after just two innings. Smith allowed six hits and five runs while walking two and striking out three. Chris Kerwood (Arkansas State University) gave the Cats pitching staff a much needed shot in the arm as he took the ball and went seven innings for the win. The righthander gave up just two runs on four hits. Kerwood walked three and struck out five as he upped his record to 3-1.

Cory Kay (Missouri State University) led the Cats at the plate as he went 4-5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Kay leads Thunder Bay with a .347 batting average. Dylan Goodwin (Central Michigan University) had two hits and scored twice, Philip Lyons (Nicholls State University) went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Dylan Becker (Missouri State University) had a 2-5 day at the plate and scored once. Kyle Hann (Mississippi State University) made his 2013 debut after playing at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. The Oakville, ON., native served as the designated hitter and went 1-2 with two runs scored. Hann reached base four times as he walked twice and was also hit by a pitch.

The Cats conclude their five-game homestand today on Canada Day against Alexandria at 1:35pm. Righthander Clint Knoblauch (1-3), of Florida Gulf Coast University is the scheduled starter for Thunder Bay.
