Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Thunder Bay, Ontario - The Alexandria Blue Anchors beat the Thunder Bay Border Cats by a score of 13-6 Saturday night at Subway Field. The Anchors now have a record of 8-22 this summer.
In the first inning, Alexandria jumped ahead quickly. Georgie Salem started the game with a base hit and was moved to second on an Andrew Sohn groundout. A single for Blanchard put runners on the corners with Tim Cusick at the plate. Blanchard took off and stole second base while Salem stole home. While trying to throw out Salem at the plate, Philip Lyons threw the ball out of play also bringing home Blanchard to give the Anchors a 2-0 lead.
The lead grew in the top of the second as Andrew Mulato drew a one-out walk. Aaron Gretz blooped a single into left putting runners on the corners. The bases were loaded when Michael Barash walked and Border Cat starter Jordan Church was close to getting out of the inning when Mulato was out at the plate on a fielder's choice by Salem. But, with two outs, Sohn drew a bases-loaded walk to score Gretz and make the score 3-0.
Thunder Bay got on the board in the bottom of the second against Anchor starter Mickie Keuning. Lyons singled and went to second on a Mulato error and went to third on a wild pitch. A groundout by Alex Bautista brought home Lyons cutting Alexandria's lead to 3-1.
With two outs in the top of the third, the Blue Anchors got a big blast to cushion their lead. Keegan Dale drew a two-out walk and went to second on a Mulato single. On a 1-2 Church offering, Gretz lined the ball over the right-field fence putting Alexandria up 6-1.
The Border Cats cut the lead again in the bottom of the inning. Dylan Decker led off with a single and went to second after Tyler Duplantis was hit by a pitch. A walk to Jason Vosler loaded the bases with nobody out. Lyons lifted a ball to centerfield for a sacrifice fly to score Becker making the score 6-2. Jacob Rogers followed with a single bringing home Duplantis to make the score 6-3.
Alexandria wasted little time getting those runs back in the top of the fourth. Salem lined a ball out to right-center field for a solo homer putting the Anchors up 7-3. Blanchard hit a one-out single and went to third on a pair of wild pitches. An error by the catcher brought him home giving the Blue Anchors an 8-3 lead.
The scoring continued for the Anchors in the top of the fifth. Dale drew a leadoff walk and a passed ball and wild pitch put Dale at third and Gretz drove him in with a single. Barash walked again and that was the end of the night for Church. Salem collected his third hit to load the bases for Sohn. Sohn grounded a ball to short, scoring Gretz, making the score 10-3.
Against reliever Zach Thiac, Alexandria scored again in the seventh. Sohn doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Ryan Blanchard to increase Alexandria's lead to 11-3.
Kris Goodman and Dale singled to start the top of the eighth. Mulato struck out swinging and Dale was forced out at second on a fielder's choice by Gretz to put runners at the corners with two down. Barash collected his first Blue Anchor hit to score Goodman, moving the score to 12-3.
Scott Sanderson who entered in the seventh, allowed the Border Cats one last chance to rally. Brad Burcoff reached on an error by Goodman to start the inning but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Alex Bautista. Joey Hawkins and Ty Stetson singled to load the bases and a double by Cory Kay brought home Bautista and Hawkins. A wild pitch by Sanderson brought home Stetson, but the Blue Anchors still led 12-6.
Cameron Wood came in to pitch the ninth for Thunder Bay and he walked Blanchard with one out. After Cusick popped out to third, Kris Goodman reached on an error by the left fielder and Blanchard was able to score, giving the Anchors a 13-6 advantage.
On the mound, Keuning (1-1) picked up the win going six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while walking four. In two innings, Sanderson walked one and gave up four hits amounting to three runs. Brandon Johnson came in to pitch the ninth and allowed just a walk for a scoreless frame.
Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Aaron Gretz (C) - In six trips to the plate, Gretz had three hits, one of which was a home run. He drove in four runs on the day while scoring three times. His average continues to climb as he is now hitting .281.
