
Stingers Score 18 to Defeat Honkers

(Rochester, MN) - The Willmar Stingers offense scored early and often as they defeated the Rochester Honkers 18-2 on Sunday June 30 at Bill Taunton Stadium in Willmar, MN.
Six hits and a pair of Rochester errors sparked an eight-run second inning for Willmar. Nick Halamandaris and Danny Brennan each doubled early in the inning, while Max Kuhn and Marc Flores delivered consecutive two-run singles later in the inning to cap off the big inning. Seven of the eight runs were charged to Honkers starting pitcher Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State.) Spitzack took the loss (1-1) as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on five hits in one-plus inning.
Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) walked to start the top half of the fourth inning and Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) followed with a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs. Hanawahine scored on a ground out RBI from Tyler Baker (Wichita State,) but Burgess was left at second base. With the double, Burgess extended his hitting streak to 19 games.
The Stingers answered with a four-run inning in their half of the fourth inning to increase their lead to 12-1 after four innings. The inning was aided by doubles from Flores and Alec Sol̮̩. Kevin Barker (UC Davis) started the top of the fifth inning with a single, Jeff Cambell (North Dakota) and Hanawahine followed with singles and the Honkers scored their second run of the game.
Tyler Leffler and Kuhn started the bottom half of the fifth inning with a pair of singles and Leffler scored on a ground out RBI from Zach Tillery to give Willmar a 13-2 lead after five innings. Brian Schwarzbach (Pennsylvania) allowed six runs on ten hits as he pitched five innings in relief for Rochester.
The Stingers added one run in the seventh and four more in the eighth inning to further build its lead. Alex Tenorio (Menlo College) allowed five runs in five innings of work. Max Homick picked up the win (1-2) for Willmar as he allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings.
The two teams will finish up a three-game series on Monday July 1 at 7:05 p.m. in Willmar. The game will also conclude an eight game road-trip for the Honkers before they return home to Mayo Field to host the St. Cloud Rox on Tuesday July 2 at 7:05 p.m. Matt Kent (Texas A&M) is slated to make the start for Rochester (17-15) on Monday, while Andrew Woeck is scheduled to start for Willmar (20-11.)
