Asheville, N.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (19-11) scored nine unanswered runs between the fourth and sixth innings to sprint past the Asheville Tourists 10-5 on Sunday afternoon at McCormick Field. The Shorebirds have now won four consecutive series, their longest streak since the 2007 season.
Michael Ohlman went 4-for-4 with a career high five RBIs to pace the Shorebirds offense. He reached in all five plate appearances. Ohlman connected on the first Delmarva Shorebirds grand slam since Joe Nowicki hit one on June 26, 2008.
The Tourists pounced on Shorebirds starter Scott Copeland in the first inning. Helder Velazquez got the rally started with a one-out single. Then, Bryce Massanari hit a double off the right-center field wall to put runners at second and third. Brett Tanos was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Corey Dickerson hit a bases clearing double into the left-center field gap to lift the Tourists to a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, Avery Barnes hit a double to score Dickerson.
The Shorebirds scored their first run in the second inning. Michael Ohlman started the inning with a double. After a wild pitch moved him to third, Mychal Givens hit a grounder to second to bring home Ohlman.
The Tourists tacked on a run in the third to increase their lead to 5-1. Avery Barnes singled and stole second and third and scored on a low throw to third by catcher Michael Ohlman.
In the fourth inning, Kipp Schutz blasted his third home run of the season well beyond the 36-foot fence in right field to cut the deficit 5-2.
The Shorebirds exploded for four runs in the fifth inning to take their first lead of the night. Planeta led off with his third double of the series to the right field wall. Then, on a single by Ty Kelly and a misplayed ball in left field by Avery Barnes, the Shorebirds had runners on second and third. Jonathan Schoop then singled to score Planeta. Schutz followed with an RBI groundout to first to plate Kelly. Two batters later, Ohlman singled to score Schoop, which tied the game at 5-5.
