Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The Lakewood BlueClaws took the first series of their 8 game road trip 3 games to 1 from the Charleston RiverDogs as they took the series finale 4-2 on Sunday evening. It was a Mothers Day that Lakewood LHP Jesse Biddle won't soon forget as he earned his first win as a BlueClaw. Biddle pitched a solid game going 5 innings, scattering 4 hits, allowing 2 runs, walking 2, and striking out 5 batters. The win has to feel great for Biddle who was the Philadelphia Phillies 1st round pick last June, and had been working very hard all year, but just hadn't quite seen the results he had hoped. Sunday his offense and his bullpen picked him up to get him his first win as a BlueClaw.
Offensively, Jim Murphy hit his team leading 8th Home Run of the year and collected his team leading 20th RBI. The HR was also the 22nd for Murphy in his career as a member of the BlueClaws which ties him with Juan Richardsonfor the most in BlueClaws franchise history. Zach Collier also picked up 2 doubles in the game to break him out the 2-24 stretch he had been in enetering the game. However, the biggest moment of the ballgame might have been when RHP Colby Shreve came in to relieve Biddle in the bottom of the 6th inning with the score 3-2 and a runner on 1st base with nobody out for Charleston. Shreve got a groundball to short for the first out, then C Torre Langley picked offRob Segedin at 1st base for out #2, followed by Shreve striking out Kelvin De Leon swinging to end the inning. Shreve pitched 3 perfect innings, struck out 2. RHP Juan Sosa collected his 3rd save of the year for Lakewood as he pitched a scoreless 9th inning.
Monday the BlueClaws will be in Greensboro, NC to take on the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the South Atlantic League affiliate of the Florida Marlins. RHP Garett Claypool will get the start for Lakewood (0-1, 2.74 ERA) and he will be opposed by RHP Jheyson Manzuela (0-2, 4.03 ERA) for Greensboro. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Monday night.
