Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Miguel Alvarez went 2-for-4 with two RBI singles, and the BlueClaws bullpen limited the RiverDogs to just one base runner over the final four innings, as Lakewood defeated Charleston, 4-2, in South Atlantic League action Sunday night in front of a crowd of 2,927 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Lakewood improved to 14-15 and won for the seventh time in nine head-to-head meetings with Charleston in 2011. The RiverDogs drop to 12-18 having lost 11 of their last 14 games.
Charleston's Zach Nuding (3-2) and Lakewood's Jesse Biddle (1-4) hooked up in the fourth and final pitching rematch of the series, and both threw up zeroes in the first and second innings.
Lakewood broke through in the third, though, scoring first for the fourth time of the series. Edgar Duran served a single to centerfield and advanced to second on a balk with nobody out. Duran then made his way around the bases on a pair of groundouts, the latter of the RBI variety by Torre Langley.
Jim Murphy parked his eighth home run of the season to extend the BlueClaws' advantage to 2-0 in the fourth. The 25-year old first baseman clocked a 1-0 fastball well over the left-centerfield fence, moving into a tie for second in the SAL in homers. In nine games against Charleston, Murphy roped four home runs and drove in 14 runners.
The middle of the RiverDogs order pieced together two base hits in the fourth to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Jose Mojica lined a single to right field and made the 270-foot trek home, when Rob Segedin hammered a payoff pitch into the left-centerfield gap for an RBI double.
Alvarez pushed the Lakewood advantage back to two runs at 3-1 with a two-out RBI single in the sixth. Alvarez sent a chopper through the middle of the infield to plate Murphy, who had worked a walk leading off the frame.
Mojica scored his second run of the game in the last of the inning, roping a leadoff double to the left-field corner to chase starter Biddle from the mound. J..R. Murphy inside-outed a RBI single to right field to trim the score to 3-2.
Biddle worked 5.0 innings-plus before leaving after facing two men in the sixth. The Phillies' 2010 first round pick bounced back from a rocky outing versus Charleston on April 27, surrendering the two runs on four hits and two walks, striking out five in the process.
Nuding lasted at least 6.0 innings for the second time this season, working in and out of harm's way to limit the damage. The 6-4 Fort Worth native yielded the three runs on six hits and two walks, fanning three.
Manny Barreda authored two superb innings of relief to follow Nuding, allowing only a walk while striking out two.
Nathan Forer could not replicated Barreda's success, however, as the BlueClaws tallied an insurance run in the ninth. Zach Collier got the rally started with a double to right, and scurried home to give Lakewood a 4-2 cushion when Alvarez delivered his second run-scoring single of the contest.
Juan Sosa nailed down his third save of the year in the bottom of the ninth, navigating around a one-out walk to give the BlueClaws a three-out-of-four series win.
BALLPARK FUN: The Lowcountry's Baseball Mom of the Year was honored as a special guest before the ballgame. It was also another Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission Family Sunday, meaning everyone was able to treat mom to a game and enjoy FREE PARKING and KIDS EAT FREE, presented by Pepsi .
UP NEXT: Right-hander Shane Greene (2-2, 4.22 ERA) looks to generate momentum from 7.0 shutout innings in his last showing as the RiverDogs usher in a four-game series with the West Virginia Power on Monday at 7:05 pm. Fellow righty Brandon Cumpton (1-3, 10.61 ERA) is expected to take the mound for the Pirates affiliate.
