Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The West Virginia Power got a pair of four-run innings and jumped out to a big lead, eventually defeating the Augusta GreenJackets 12-6 on Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium. In the win, Jameson Taillon - the second overall pick in the 2010 Draft - earned his first professional victory.
Taillon (1-0) fired five innings of one-run baseball, allowing three hits and striking out five without walking anyone. Prior to this game, Taillon had started just twice before and had thrown only six innings professionally.
With the game tied at one in the third inning, Matt Curry's solo home run broke the tie to give the Power a lead they wouldn't lose. In both the fourth and sixth innings, West Virginia sent eight hitters to the plate and brought home four runs each off Mario Rodriguez and Matt Graham respectively, pushing the lead to nine.
Curry drove in five of West Virginia's 12 runs while Kawika Emsley-Pai brought home four. The GreenJackets scored in the sixth and seventh on a Devin Harris RBI double and a Sundrendy Windster solo home run before the Power pushed another pair across in the eighth to take a 12-3 lead. In the last of the eighth, Ryan Scoma hit a two-run home run and Scoma would go on to single in another in the ninth. With two on, and the GreenJackets trailing by six, Adam Duvall's drive to deep left was caught at the wall to seal the win for West Virginia.
Mario Rodriguez (0-3) struggled to finish five innings, allowing six runs on nine hits and a walk without recording a strikeout.
The Power took an early lead on Rogelio Noris's second inning RBI single. Augusta struck back on Rafael Rodriguez's run-scoring hit on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the second to tie the game at one before Curry's home run in the next half inning.
The GreenJackets were unable to earn their first series win of the year but the split of the four-game series means the GreenJackets avoided their first series loss of the season.
The Rome Braves come to town on Monday to open a four-game set in the second half of Augusta's homestand. The GreenJackets send Seth Rosin (0-2, 5.40) to the mound against Carlos Perez (2-3, 5.06). First pitch will come at 7:05 with the pregame action beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
Single-game and Season Tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
