Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Rome Braves beat the Savannah Sand Gnats 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium to earn a split of the teams' four-game series. The Gnats (12-17) host the Hickory Crawdads, who entered Sunday with the South Atlantic League's best record, for four games Monday through Thursday this week.
The Braves (8-22) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning off Savannah starter Erik Goeddel. With two outs, after a walk and an infield single, DH Robert Hefflinger clubbed a two-run triple to deep right-center field. It was the first triple of the year for Hefflinger.
Outside of the Braves' two-run fourth, Goeddel was sharp through his six innings of work on Sunday. He faced the minimum nine batters through the first three innings and retired six of the final seven batters he saw. All told, he allowed two runs on three hits and a walk and struck out five, but took his second loss of the year.
The Gnats offense managed five hits Sunday, all by two players: LF Cory Vaughn and CF Darrell Ceciliani. Vaughn was 3-4 with a double, while Ceciliani, in his fourth game back after pulling a hamstring in the season's first week, was 2-4 with a pair of singles.
Rome starter Ronan Pacheco fired six shutout innings to win his first game of the year for the Braves. Kyle Mertins worked around a Vaughn double in the ninth for his first save.
The Gnats will hand the ball to RHP Gonzalez Germen (1-1, 5.09) against Hickory RHP Carlos Melo (2-2, 6.19) Monday, in the opener game of their four-game series against the Crawdads. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and gates open at 6 pm. The pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 6:50 pm.
