Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 8, 2011) - Starter Paul Burnside (3-0) pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 1-0 win over the Greenville Drive on Sunday night at Fieldrest Cannon Stadium in the finale of a four game series. The win gave Kannapolis the 3-1 series victory over Greenville.
The Intimidators took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, DH Drew Lee hit a pop up into shallow right field that neither RF Bryce Brentz or 2B Sean Coyle called for, and the ball dropped in for a double. RF Kenny Gilbert followed with a single to drive in Lee and give the Intimidators the 1-0 lead.
That's all the scoring Kannapolis would need as Steven Upchurch came on in relief of Burnside and tossed two scoreless innings of one hit ball to get his second save of the season. Miguel Celestino (2-2) picked up the loss for Greenville, as he gave up one run on six hits in four innings while striking out seven.
Tyler Lockwood and Scott Swinson combined to pitch four innings of scoreless relief for the drive, as they gave up two hits and struck out eight batters. The 15 strikeouts recorded by Greenville pitching is the most by an opponent against the Intimidators since the second game of the season at Lakewood on April 10, when the BlueClaws struck out 17 Intimidators in 16 innings.
In the top of the ninth inning Brentz hit a two out single to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.
Kannapolis begins a four game series against the Lexington Legends on Monday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The Intimidators are 2-3 against the Legends this season. Kannapolis will send RHP Ryan Buch (2-2, 4.13) to the mound against RHP Carlos Quevedo (3-0, 3.86) for Lexington.
