SALEM, Va. - Pedro Castellanos ripped a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to send the Salem Red Sox to a 6-5 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Friday night from Haley Toyota Field.
Salem (47-55, 22-13) started their comeback in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the Birds leading 5-3, Edgar Corcino singled home a run to cut the deficit to 5-4 before Pelicans (19-17, 40-63) reliever Chad Hockin (L, 0-1) balked in the game-tying run to make it 5-5.
In the ninth, Ryan Fitzgerald walked to start the frame, was wild pitched to second and balked to third before scoring on Castellanos RBI single.
Dominic LoBrutto (W, 1-0) earned the victory for the Red Sox, throwing a scoreless top of the ninth inning with a strikeout.
In the first inning, after a pair of infield singles from Fitzgerald and Castellanos, Salem jumped out in front with a three-run home run from Corcino to make it 3-0.
In the third, the Pelicans countered with three runs of their own. Kevonte Mitchell crushed a two-run bomb, his 11th of the season to tie a career high that he set with the South Bend Cubs in 2017. His homer made it 3-2 Salem. After Carlos Sepulveda lined a triple to right, Delvin Zinn then singled him home to tie the game at 3-3.
The following inning, Wladimir Galindo gave the Birds the 4-3 lead with an RBI single, scoring Grant Fennell, went 2-for-4 on the night.
That score held until the eighth when Fennell laced an RBI single to left, plating Zinn to tack on and make it 5-3, but Cam Balego was thrown out at the plate to retire the side.
