Winston-Salem Dash News Release
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Behind another quality start from Jonathan Stiever and 10 hits from the Dash offense, Winston-Salem secured its third consecutive win by beating Lynchburg 7-3 on Friday night at City Stadium.
Making his seventh start with the Dash (17-18, 55-44), Stiever (4-3) tossed six strong frames, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out six. The former fifth-round pick out of Indiana University has now logged seven quality starts over his first seven outings at the High-A level. The righty also now has 51 strikeouts over 45.0 innings pitched.
Winston-Salem got its offense rolling early in the series opener against Kirk McCarty (2-3). JJ Muno began the contest with an infield single, and, two batters later, Steele Walker lined a run-scoring double into the gap in right-center to give the Dash an early 1-0 edge.
However, Lynchburg (15-19, 47-54) tied the contest in the bottom of the first. Steven Kwan doubled with one out, and Mitch Reeves later in the frame smacked an RBI double to knot the contest at one.
The Dash quickly retook the lead in the second. First, Jameson Fisher started the frame with a single. After back-to-back outs, Tate Blackman drilled a run-scoring double to right-center to make it a 2-1 contest. Lynchburg managed to tie the ballgame in the third with an RBI single from Wilbis Santiago, but Winston-Salem regained the lead for good in the fifth.
After two quick outs in the top of the frame, Muno and Mitch Roman stroked back-to-back singles to chase McCarty out of the game. Randy Valladares then replaced McCarty and took the mound to face Walker.
On a 2-2 pitch, Walker bounced a grounder to the third baseman Santiago, who made a strong throw to first. But, the first baseman Reeves missed catching the throw, allowing Muno to come into score on the error. Then, Craig Dedelow grounded a two-run single to center to make it a 5-2 contest.
The Dash added their final two runs in the eighth on an RBI double from Blackman and an RBI single from Muno. Meanwhile, Bennett Sousa logged two perfect innings out of the bullpen before Jake Elliott wrapped up the win by allowing just one run in the ninth.
Winston-Salem continues its three-game set on Saturday against the Hillcats at 6 p.m. The Dash will send right-hander Kade McClure (2-1, 2.32 ERA) to the hill against Lynchburg righty Juan Mota (1-0, 3.60 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 p.m., and fans can catch all of the action on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn Radio App.
Following their six-game road trip, the Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for a six-game homestand from July 30-August 4 against the Hillcats and the Carolina Mudcats.
The three-game set with Lynchburg begins with $2 tacos on Tuesday. Wednesday's contest will be the first-ever "Dash Duty Day". Meanwhile, the series finale will be a Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday as well a Pups in the Park Night presented by Handy and Handy Orthodontics.
