Zebulon, NC --- Zack Cozart and Shaun Cumberland hit consecutive two-run doubles as part of a four-run seventh inning to lead Carolina to its fifth straight win, defeating Mississippi 8-7 before 6,754 fans at Five County Stadium.
Carolina's only other lead was 3-2 when Jake Long hit an opposite field home run in the second, but rallied from a 7-4 deficit to extend its longest winning streak of the second half.
The Braves (33-32) and Mudcats (26-41) exchanged two runs in the first, but leading 3-2 in the third, Luis Montano surrendered four runs as Mississippi batted around for a 6-3 lead. Yonder Alonso blasted a solo home run in the third to slice the deficit to 6-3, but Mississippi maintained the advantage for Kyle Cofield, who was pursuing his 11th victory.
Carolina's surge occurred against three Braves pitchers in the seventh inning, with Jose Castro and Sean Henry starting the push with singles against Steve Malek. Lee Hyde (L, 1-1) issued a walk, followed by doubles by Cozart and Cumberland to give the Mudcats the lead. Cory Gearrin entered to close the door on the four-run inning.
Ramon Geronimo (W, 4-3) earned a victory for the second straight game, while Sean Watson (S, 7) fanned all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth to record his seventh save.
The series continues Saturday night at 6:15 PM ET with Alexander Smit making the start for the Mudcats.
