JACKSON, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies (36-31) used a 10 run rally in the top of the sixth inning to power past the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (35-32), as the Smokies won with a 13-3 score at Pringles Park on Friday night.
With the win, the Smokies are now one game ahead of the Diamond Jaxx with three games to play. Chattanooga fell 7-2 to the Birmingham Barons, putting the Lookouts two games back of Tennessee.
After West Tenn took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, the Smokies lit up the scoreboard with 10 runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a solo home run by Marquez Smith, and a grand slam by Tyler Colvin to put the score at 11-3.
David Cales (3-0) took the win for Tennessee, pitching three scoreless innings in relief for starter Jeremy Papelbon.
The Smokies added two runs in the eighth on Russ Canzler's second homer of the series to put the score at 13-3.
Alex Maestri and Brian Schlitter combined to pitch the final two innings of the game to preserve the Tennessee victory.
The Smokies will look to Andrew Cashner (2-4) on the mound for Saturday's third game of the series beginning at 8:05 ET. Cashner will be opposed by West Tenn right-hander Dan Cortes (1-4).
