Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - The Biscuits claimed a see-saw affair from the Mobile BayBears, snapping a four-game losing skid with a dramatic 5-4 victory in game two of a five-game series on Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The Biscuits game-winning rally in the ninth was sparked by Brandon Chaves with one out. He slapped a liner in left-center field and aggressively pulled for second. He successfully stretched the single into a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch from Jordan Norberto. Pedro Powell then singled through the middle of a drawn-in infield to plate Chaves with the eventual game-winning run. Norberto (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Mobile.
Matt Gorgen nailed down the win, but had some difficulty doing so in the ninth inning. He allowed runners to second and third with one out, before striking out both Mark Hallberg and Pedro Ciriaco to end the ballgame in the Biscuits favor.
Game two of the series was a pitcher's duel early, as Tom Layne and Ryan Morse traded scoreless innings. Neither club had a runner past second base through four innings, while Layne limited the Biscuits to one hit and Morse held the BayBears to three hits, two of which were infield-singles.
Layne added a fifth scoreless inning, and the BayBears finally got to Morse in the bottom of the inning. Morse walked Pete Clifford to start the inning. Clifford worked his way to third base as Morse retired the next two hitters. The nine-hole hitter, Eli Rumler then cracked an RBI single back up the middle to give Mobile the lead, scoring Clifford. Evan Frey replicated the single and Mark Hallberg made it three consecutive two-out singles to score Rumler for a 2-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived as the Biscuits mounted a rally against Layne in the sixth. Layne started his own problems by hitting Fernando Cortez with one out before conceding a single to Chris Nowak. Jose Lobaton then delivered an RBI single to put Montgomery on the board. A batter later, Cody Strait drilled a two-run double into the alley in left-center field to give the Biscuits the lead for the first time, 3-2.
Morse departed after the fifth inning, and didn't factor in the decision in his final start of the season. Layne left after six innings, and also didn't register a decision.
Eddie Morlan entered for Montgomery in the sixth inning, and the BayBears promptly grabbed the lead back. Morlan hit Cyle Hankerd with one out and then walked Pete Clifford to put two aboard. Both runners scored for a 4-3 Mobile lead when Chris Rahl sent a two-run double down the right-field line.
That lead also didn't last as the Biscuits got a quick run to tie the game off reliever Leyson Septimo in the seventh inning. Jason Bowers singled to start the inning and stole both second and third base. He tied the game, 4-4, when Septimo delivered a wild-pitch to the backstop.
Mike Wlodarczyk (1-4) earned the win for the Biscuits by working a scoreless eighth inning, prior to the Biscuits game-winning rally in the ninth.
Game three of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. LHP Brandon Mann (6-9, 4.19) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Wes Roemer (9-8, 3.98) for Mobile.
