Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - A run in the top of the ninth and a pair of strikeouts with two men in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Montgomery Biscuits past the BayBears 5-4 on Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
There wasn't a run scored in the contest until the bottom of the fifth as the BayBears (65-72, 28-39) scratched home a pair against Ryan Morse. Pete Clifford walked to start the frame, then stole second ahead of a two-out RBI single by Eli Rumler. The hits continued from there as Evan Frey punched a single as did Mark Hallberg who singled home Rumler.
Montgomery (63-73, 30-36) quickly jumped on top in the sixth against Tom Layne who fanned six hitters over six innings. Fernando Cortez was hit by a pitch and took second on a single by Chris Nowak. Jose Lobaton's base hit brought home Cortez, while both Nowak and Lobaton crossed the dish on a two-out double by Cody Strait.
Eddie Morlan replaced Morse after five frames and hit Cyle Hankerd with a pitch to put him on in front of another walk to Clifford. Chris Rahl then banged a fastball down the right field line to bring Hankerd and Clifford to the plate, putting the BayBears on top 4-3.
They didn't keep that lead for very long either as Jason Bowers singled against Leyson Septimo to start the seventh. He then swiped a pair of bases and tallied the tying run on a wild pitch.
Jordan Norberto (0-1) was next out of the bullpen for the BayBears and hung a zero in the eighth, striking out the side after unleashing a lead-off walk. Brandon Chaves turned a routine single into a double with one out in the ninth and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With the infield drawn in, Pedro Powell poked a single up the middle to knock in Chaves.
With a save in tow, Matthew Gorgen (S, 4) ran into some trouble with Matt Tupman starting the last of the ninth with a single to center. After a sac bunt, Frey singled to put Tupman on third while Frey took second on a throw home. Gorgen buckled down from there, punching out Hallberg and Pedro Ciriaco to end the contest.
The Mobile BayBears have sent 100 players to the major leagues. They'll continue their final homestand on Saturday night at 7:05 with Wes Roemer (9-8, 3.98) getting the start. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
