Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Birmingham got off to an early lead against Chattanooga and was able to mitigate, match and raise several late-inning rallies by the Lookouts to hold onto their lead on Friday night. With the 7-2 loss, Chattanooga's playoff aspirations dissipated, as the Lookouts were mathematically eliminated from the playoff hunt. A Lee Cruz solo shot to lead off the second inning gave the Barons an early 1-0 lead. Birmingham added two more runs in the third. Jordan Danks hit a homer to begin the inning. After two quick outs were recorded, Dayan Viciedo, Jim Gallagher, and Lee Cruz singled to put the score at 3-0. The Lookouts finally entered the scoreboard in the seventh. With out already on the board, four straight singles by Tommy Giles, Gaby Gutierrez, Juan Gonzalez, and James Tomlin resulted in the Lookouts' first run. With the bases still loaded with just one out, Chattanooga proceeded to bungle the opportunity by hitting two fly outs to end the inning and the rally. Cruz played a little déjà vu in the eighth by, once again, leading off the inning with a solo shot. Chattanooga chipped away at the Barons' lead in the eight by plating another run on an RBI double by Vinny Rottino. The Barons quickly took the wind out of the Lookouts' sails in the ninth by scoring three runs. A two-RBI double from Jim Gallagher and subsequent Lee Cruz RBI double highlighted the rally for Birmingham. Birmingham relief pitcher Ricky Brooks came into the ninth and was able to shut out the Lookouts to preserve the 7-2 win. Justin Cassel (4-2) pitched 6.1 innings to earn the win for the Barons. He yielded one run on eight hits and one walk, while striking out eight. Mario Alvarez (0-1), making his debut for the Lookouts on the mound, had a rather forgettable experience and took the loss for Chattanooga. In three innings of work, he surrendered three runs, six hits, and one walk. He struck out three in the losing effort. The Chattanooga Lookouts and Birmingham Barons will continue their five-game series at 7:15 P.M., tomorrow. Tickets for this game or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
