
Smokies rebound with thrashing of Jaxx Friday

JACKSON, TN - The Tennessee Smokies (36-31) rebounded on Friday night and used a 10 run sixth inning to beat the Diamond Jaxx (35-32), 13-3. The loss pushes the Jaxx back into second place, trailing the Smokies by a game with three tilts remaining. Luis Munoz (8-7) lost for the first time since August 2nd, as he yielded five runs in five plus innings on the mound. The 13 runs allowed and 16 hits surrendered were the second most given up by the Jaxx this season. Tyler Colvin led the charge for Tennessee, going 3-for-6 with a grand slam and five RBI. Carlos Triunfel and Johan Limonta registered two-hit games for West Tenn and Jose Yepez extended his hitting streak to seven games.
Jaxx starter, Luis Munoz string of 18 consecutive scoreless innings ended in the second inning on Friday night. Tyler Colvin led off the inning with a triple to the right field alley. Colvin scored on an RBI groundout by Starlin Castro, giving the Smokies a 1-0 lead. The last run Munoz surrendered was in the second inning on August 18th in Huntsville.
The Jaxx rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning and plated three runs against Tennessee starter, Jeremy Papelbon. Jose Yepez increased his hitting streak to seven games as he plated Carlos Triunfel and Johan Limonta. Later, Rich Poythress came across on a Greg Halman fielders choice. The Jaxx jumped out to a 3-0 advantage.
The Tennessee Smokies sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth inning and scoring 10 runs. Tennessee collected eight hits in the inning with Brandon Guyer, Starlin Castro and Robinson Chirinos all collecting RBI's. Marquez hit his second homer of the series during the inning and the reigning âTopps Player of the Month" Tyler Colvin hit a grand slam and drove in five during the frame. The 10 runs given up by the Jaxx was the most in a game this season. The Smokies opened up the game and led the Jaxx 11-3.
Luis Munoz left the game during the 10 run inning by Tennessee. Munoz gave up five runs over five innings and scattered eight hits. Munoz struck out five and walked one in his first loss since August 2nd. The loss breaks the string of four wins in a row for Munoz.
Tennessee added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning extending the Smokies lead to 13-3. Russ Canzler smacked a two-run homerun, plating Blake Lalli. Canzler has hit two homeruns during the first two games of the series.
With the Smokies up a game on the Jaxx, RHP Dan Cortes (1-4, 5.48) will take the mound for the Diamond Jaxx and he will be opposed by RHP Andrew Cashner (2-4, 3.86) for the Smokies.
