Montgomery, AL --- Alexander Smit and Joe Krebs each started shutout victories as Carolina swept a doubleheader from Montgomery 1-0 and 5-0 at Riverwalk Stadium.

In the opener, Smit (W, 4-3) pitched six scoreless innings en route to the victory. Carolina scored the game's only run in the third inning on a single to right by Jose Castro, scoring Jake Long. Long and Castro each collected a pair of hits in the five-hit contest. Long's two hits were doubles. Sean Watson (S, 6) registered his sixth save. Smit fanned a season-high nine hitters, while Watson struck out two.

In the nightcap, Yonder Alonso's third inning single started the scoring, then came home on Zack Cozart's two-run homer for a 3-0 lead. The Mudcats defeated Alex Torres, who was acquired Saturday by Tampa Bay in the Scott Kazmir trade. Torres was leading the Los Angels organization in wins (13) and strikeouts (149).

Krebs did not qualify for the victory, but did work 3 1/3 innings in an emergency start for the Mudcats (23-41) after the Reds promoted Camilo Vazquez to Triple-A after Sunday's rainout. Krebs was making his first professional start after 97 relief appearances. Zach Ward (W,1-4) worked 1 2/3 innings to secure the win, with Ruben Medina completing the 5-0 shutout with two scoreless innings.

Carolina plays its final road game of the 2009 regular season on Tuesday night at 8:05 PM ET with Jeremy Horst getting the start.
