Barons Sweep Twinbill

August 31, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

It was a familiar double-header script for the Barons Monday night at Regions Park against the Stars. The Barons tossed John Ely and Matt Zaleski, and they swept the double dip by scores of 2-1 and 3-2 in eight innings.

CJ Retherford gave Ely a chance to pick up his Southern League best 13th win of the season in game one. After Jordan Danks tied the game with an RBI double, Retherford hit a soft line drive to left field that put the Barons ahead at 2-1.

Ely (13-2, 2.93) went five innings and gave up one run on five hits. He struck out seven batters to increase his Southern League high in strikeouts to 121.

Clevelan Santeliz pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn his eighth save.

The Barons used some walkoff magic in game two.

After allowing the Stars to score the go-ahead run in the top half of the eighth inning, the home team loaded the bases with no outs before Robbie Hudson poked a soft line drive down the right field line to win the game.

Zaleski tossed 7.1 innings in game two, allowing just two runs in 7.1 innings despite surrendering 12 hits. The Chicago native struck out two batters and walked none, but didn't factor into the decision.

John Lujan (2-5, 4.55) earned the win after recording the final two outs in the top half of the eighth inning.

Prior to the double-header, Ever Magallanes was named the Southern League Manager of the Year. He is the fifth Barons manager to win the honor.

In addition, five Barons were named to the Southern League Postseason All-Star Team. David Cook, John Ely, Tyler Flowers, Stefan Gartrell and CJ Retherford each received the honor.

The Barons will close out the home portion of the 2009 regular season with a 7:05 PM game Tuesday.
