Carolina Suffers Series Tying Loss in Delmarva

SALISBURY, M.d. - Daniel Guilarte went 2-for-4 while extending his hitting streak to 12 straight games, Luis Lara went 2-for-4 with a double, Shane Smith struck out seven over three innings in relief, but the Carolina Mudcats stranded 12 baserunners while losing to the Delmarva Shorebirds 6-2 on Wednesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Yujanyer Herrera started for the Mudcats (12-9) and originally worked a scoreless first, before leaving in the second. Herrera (L, 1-1) retired two batters in the second, but well after giving up four runs on three hits and six wild pitches. Herrera's six wild pitches were the most by a Mudcats pitchers in franchise history.
Delmarva's Adam Crampton and Creed Willems both had scoring hits off Herrera in the second. Willems also later homered in the seventh off Smith.
The Shorebirds (13-8) led 4-0 after the second and 5-0 through the fifth before the Mudcats rallied for a couple of runs in the sixth off reliever Moises Chace. That two-run sixth included a RBI single from Jesus Parra and a run-scoring wild pitch lost by Chace (W, 2-0).
The Mudcats were down 5-2 after the sixth and were held scoreless the rest of the way by relievers Luis Sanchez and Yaqui Rivera. Sanchez allowed a hit while pitching a scoreless seventh and eighth for Delmarva. Rivera worked the ninth and struck out two while finishing Delmarva's series tying victory.
Now tied at a game apiece, the series will continue on Thursday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. in Delmarva.
