Zebulon, NC- The Mudcats overcame early struggles with late inning rallies and strong performances out of the bullpen by Alexander Smit and Frederico Baez, beating the Jacksonville Suns 7-3 at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.

Starter Misael DeJesus lasted only four innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits and five walks, while striking out three.

Former Mudcat Chris De La Cruz hit a solo homer deep to right center in the third inning, representing the Suns final offensive output, giving the Suns a 3-0 lead.

Surrendering two first inning runs, the Mudcats trailed 3-0 until Juan Francisco tripled in the fourth and scored on a groundout by Logan Parker.

Smit came in for the fifth and pitched three scoreless innings, followed by a scoreless 1.2 innings by Baez (W, 3-2). The Mudcats rallied for four runs in the 8th, earning Baez the win, thanks to a tie-breaking single by Francisco, and later a two-run, two-out single by Jose Castro.

The series resumes Sunday afternoon at 2PM, as Carolina's Travis Wood (2-3, 1.36) matches up against Jacksonville's Graham Taylor (2-2, 3.74).
