Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats (14-21) scored seven unanswered runs after the third inning, including the four deciding runs in the eighth inning, for a 7-3 victory over the Jacksonville Suns (18-18) in front of 4,749 Saturday night at Five County Stadium.

Carolina reliever Federico Baez (3-2) picked up the win, dealing one and two-thirds hitless innings at the end of the game with three strikeouts. Baez combined with Alexander Smit and Camilo Vazquez combined to allow one hit over five combined innings out of the bullpen.

Jacksonville reliever Adalberto Mendez (1-2) picked up the loss, allowing four runs and three hits over two-thirds of an inning. The runs were the first against Mendez in the month of May, as he had allowed only three hits over nine innings in seven different outings before Saturday.

Jacksonville opened an early lead against Carolina starter Misael DeJesus, taking advantage of three first inning walks. Bryan Petersen drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and a Scott Cousins double knocked in another for a 2-0 lead. Chris de la Cruz led off the third against DeJesus with his first homerun of the season, opening a 3-0 advantage.

The Mudcats scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to tie the score. Logan Parker drove in the first run on a groundout, Todd Frazier drove in the second run with his league-leading 16th double and a one-out error by Suns first baseman Andy Jenkins plated the tying run.

Carolina took the lead in the eighth, scoring four times against Mendez. Juan Francisco singled in Chris Heisey for a 4-3 lead. A bases loaded walk of Shaun Cumberland drove in another run before Jose Castro's single plated two more to end the scoring at 7-3.

Suns LH Graham Taylor will face Mudcats LH Travis Wood in game two of the series Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET at Five County Stadium. Live radio coverage is available on WFXJ-AM 930 and online at jaxsuns.com.
