
Jaxx take series with 9-2 win over Smokies

KODAK, TENN. (MAY 16, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (13-19) win their third series of 2009 and beat the Tennessee Smokies (16-15) in game five of the series 9-2 last night at Smokies Park. West Tenn takes three out of five from Tennessee. Johan Limonta's 4-5 night at the plate paced a 14 hit outburst by the Jaxx on Friday night. Justin Souza (2-2) dealt 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits, while striking out six in his longest outing of the year.
The Jaxx opened the scoring in the top of the second with Greg Halman hitting his 11th homerun of the season. Guillermo Quiroz lined the first pitch he sees in his Jaxx debut for an RBI knock scoring Johan Limonta. The Jaxx jumped on top with a 2-0 lead.
The Jaxx added a run in the fifth inning, extending their led to 3-0. The Smokies drew near in the sixth when Richie Robnett hit a solo homerun off of Jaxx starter Justin Souza. Later in the inning, Darwin Barney brought in Jonathon Mota on a sacrifice fly to center. The Smokies cut the lead to 3-2 after five.
Eight batters came to the plate in the seventh inning for the Jaxx as two runs crossed the plate. Ezequiel Carrera picked up the second of his bunt singles in the game and eventually stole home as Mel Stocker got caught in a run-down between first and second base. In the eighth, 11 batters would come up for the Jaxx. The innings was capped off by a 2-RBI single by Johan Limonta. The Jaxx took a 9-2 lead into the ninth.
Ezequiel Carrera, Greg Halman, Johan Limonta, Guillermo Quiroz and Oswaldo Navarro all picked up multi-hit games with Limonta picking up his first four hit game of the year. Limonta and Matt Mangini drove in two runs apiece in the game.
Marcos Mateo (1-1) was pulled after 4.1 innings pitched. Mateo gave up three runs on eight hits and struck out four. Nick Hill pitched up a hold as he backed up Souza with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Hill made his team leading 15th appearance of the year. Marwin Vega tossed a scoreless ninth.
The Jaxx open a six game series with the Birmingham Barons at Pringles Park Saturday night at 7:05. RHP Steven Hensley (0-1, 5.40) makes start number three since being promoted from Low-A Clinton. Hensley will be making his Pringles Park debut. RHP Lucas Harrell (3-1, 3.38) toes the rubber for Birmingham in game one of the series.
Saturday night there will be post-game fireworks brought to you by JEA. Also, a make up from last Saturday, the Diamond Jaxx will be wearing white, pink, pinstriped jerseys during the game. Fans may bid on these jerseys and all proceeds benefit breast cancer awareness. Also, the
Tennessee Army National Guard will have a fly over before the game as well as a swearing in ceremony during the post-game. For tickets fans can call 988-JAXX (5299).
