Biscuits Blasted by Braves, 12-1

MOBILE, AL - The Biscuits five-game win streak came to a screeching halt as Mississippi drubbed them, 12-1, in game one of a five-game series on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Biscuits brought momentum home with them and struck first in the third inning. Following a two-inning rehab stint for Jorge Campillo, right-hander Kyle Cofield entered in relief for Mississippi and was promptly greeted by a Cesar Suarez single. Cofield then walked Desmond Jennings and Brandon Chaves laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to put the runners at second and third. Rhyne Hughes brought home Suarez with a broken-bat groundout to give the Biscuits a 1-0 lead.

Mississippi responded off of Biscuits' starter Brandon Mann in the fifth inning. With one out, Antonio Perez got the Braves started with a single. Mann then walked Gorkys Hernandez to put two aboard. Willie Cabrera followed with a two-run double to left-center field to give the Braves the lead. Mann departed in favor of Chris Mason who permitted a double to JC Boscan that brought in Cabrera for a 3-1 lead.

Mann (2-1) was charged with three earned runs and took the loss for the Biscuits, snapping a personal two-game win-streak.

Things turned ugly for the Biscuits in the sixth inning as Mississippi blew the game wide-open with an eight-run inning. Mason started the inning for Montgomery and conceded a leadoff single to Concepcion Rodriguez. Mason walked Brandon Hicks to put two aboard and a batter later Antonio Perez singled to load the bases. Hernandez then doubled home two runs to make it 5-1. Mason walked Matt Young and was replaced by Neal Frontz. Cabrera greeted him with a single and Boscan followed with a two-run double. A batter later, Rodriguez, batting for the second time in the inning, drilled the first pitch from Frontz for a two-run homer to left, capping the inning at 11-1.

Frontz conceded a final run to Mississippi in the seventh. All told, the Biscuits bullpen allowed nine earned runs over 5 1/3 innings of work.

Cofield (2-1) was the beneficiary of all the run support, working around six walks and three hits over five innings to earn his second win of the season.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 2:05 PM on Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium. RHP Aneury Rodriguez (1-5, 5.91) will make the start for Montgomery against LHP Jonny Venters (2-1, 1.56) for Mississippi.
