Barons and Mudcats Game Suspended in 11th Inning

Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham didn't want Friday night's game against the Carolina Mudcats to end. Mother Nature just didn't cooperate with their desires as the game was ultimately suspended in the 11th inning after a lengthy rain delay.
Twice down to their final strike in the ninth inning, the Barons got two hits to overcome a two-run deficit and send the game into extra innings with the scored tied at three.
Jordan Danks hit a 3-2 looping single just between the shortstop and left fielder that scored CJ Retherford and tied the game in the ninth inning. Just moments earlier, Retherford took a 1-2 pitch off the wall for a two-run double that brought the Barons to within one run.
Heavy rain started moving into the area as the game moved into the tenth inning. With one out in the top half of the 11th inning, the umpires finally called the Barons off the field as the grounds crew rolled out the tarp.
But the weight from the rain wouldn't allow the Barons to fully cover the field with the tarp. Even after nine Barons players ran on the field to help the grounds crew, the home plate and first base areas were still completely unprotected from the swirling rains.
There is still no official word on when the game will be resumed as the Mudcats do not return to Regions Park in 2009 and the Barons do not play in Carolina until the second half of the season. The statistics for the game will go into the books as if the game were completed.
The Barons take to the road Saturday for the first game of a 10-day, 12-game road trip as the SEC Baseball Tournament moves into Regions Park. The Barons and West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx will play the first of six-games Saturday with a 7:05 PM first pitch.
