
Barons beat Jaxx 10-8 in slugfest at Pringles Park

JACKSON, TENN. - The first place Birmingham Barons (24-9) took game one of the six game series over the Diamond Jaxx (13-20) at Pringles Park 10-8. The Barons out hit the Jaxx 13-12 in the slugfest, as the Barons dealt the final knockout punch scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Marshall Hubbard and Ezequiel Carrera tallied three hit games each in the loss.
Ezequiel Carrera led the bottom of the first off with a bunt single. Carrera stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Mel Stocker. Marshall Hubbard brought in Carrera with an RBI ground out to second and the Jaxx led 1-0.
Birmingham answered in the top of the second by scoring three runs. The first was on a solo homerun off the bat of Brandon Allen, and the next two runs on a 2-RBI double by C.J. Retherford. Birmingham took a 3-1 lead.
The Jaxx tied it up in the bottom half of the inning. Ronnie Prettyman picked up an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly by Ezequiel Carrera. The game was tied 3-3 after two innings. Dayan Viciedo doubled in a run in the top of third giving Birmingham a brief lead, and Johan Limonta tied the game at four with a RBI double in the bottom half of the inning.
Dayan Viciedo struck again in the top of the fourth as he drove in two with his second of four hits in the game, giving Birmingham a 6-4 lead. Ezequiel Carrera scored in the bottom of the fourth inning, on a fielding error by left fielder John Shelby cutting the lead to 6-5. The Jaxx tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with Marshal Hubbard's fourth homerun of the year.
Mumba Rivera (3-3) replaced Steven Hensley in the sixth inning. Hensley dealt five innings and allowed six runs while he walked five in the no decision. Two runs for the Barons scored on a fielding error by Ronnie Prettyman and two more on a Stefan Gartrell double. The Barons took a 10-6 lead. Rivera allowed three earned runs in the inning.
West Tenn picked up two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Ezequiel doubled off the left field wall bringing in Matt Mangini and Mel Stocker's RBI groundout made the lead 10-8. Clevelen Santeliz retired Marshall Hubbard and the Barons took game one of the series.
Lucas Harrell (4-1) picks up the win for Birmingham. Harrell threw five innings and allowed five earned runs on nine hits. Rivera picked the loss for West Tenn.
A double-header is scheduled for today with game one beginning at 2:05. The game one pitching matchup features RHP Kyle Parker (1-1, 4.15) goes for the Jaxx as RHP John Ely (4-1, 426) starts for Birmingham. In game two, RHP Steve Bray (0-1, 3.46) toes the hill for the Jaxx and RHP Matt Zaleski (0-0, 5.40) gets the ball for the Barons.
