Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC-- Chicago White Sox's Carlos Rodon will be back on the bump once again on Saturday, May 19th with Single-A Kannapolis for the start of a patient set of rehab assignments for the White Sox potential ace of the future, almost eight months after receiving shoulder surgery.
Rodon was plagued with the injury bug during his 2017 campaign, missing three months with left biceps bursitis that delayed his debut until June 28. After throwing 69.1 innings over 12 starts with a 2-5 record, the hard throwing left-handed pitcher from nearby Holly Springs, N.C. was scratched from his start on Sept. 7 against the Indians during his pregame warmup, with shoulder surgery coming just a couple weeks after.
With the White Sox, the third overall pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft has compiled a 20-21 record with a 3.95 ERA through 66 games, striking out, on average, 9.9 batters per nine innings.
Before the surgery, the former NC State Wolfpack hurler posted a 2.93 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 40 innings from July 25 to Aug. 21 in 2017, showing the southpaw's upside when healthy.
At NC State, Rodon quickly put his name high on the MLB radar with a 9-0 record in his freshman season, throwing two complete games in 114.2 innings, while posting a 1.57 ERA with 135 strikeouts. At the conclusion of his freshman campaign, Rodon was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, a Consensus first team All-American and Freshman All-American, and Louisville Slugger's National Freshman Pitcher of the Year.
After breaking almost every pitching record with the Wolfpack and climbing up the ladder as one of the most decorated ACC pitchers of all-time, Rodon set a NC State single-season record with 184 strikeouts in his sophomore season. Since 2003, only Jered Weaver, Trevor Bauer, Tim Lincecum, Stephen Strasburg, and David Price have recorded more strikeouts in a single season.
Rodon will join a Kannapolis Intimidators team that is at the top of the South Athletic League with a 25-13 record under manager Justin Jirchele, posting a team 2.97 ERA (3rd lowest in SAL), while leading the SAL with a .285 team batting average.
