Springfield Cardinals News Release

Steven Hill snapped a 1-1 tie with a two-run double in the fifth and Francisco Samuel hung on in the ninth, as the Springfield Cardinals snapped their four-game skid with a 4-3 win over the Arkansas Travelers on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Cards (35-28) are now two games up on both Tulsa (33-30) and Northwest Arkansas (33-30) with just seven games to go in the first half.

An error which allowed Daryl Jones to reach in the fifth inning would prove costly, as Daniel Descalso singled with two outs, setting the table for Steven Hill. Mired in a 3-for-25 slump, Hill delivered with a two-run double down the right-field line against Jordan Walden (1-3), breaking the 1-all tie, giving Springfield the lead for good at 3-1.

Cards' starter Trey Hearne (6-1) was the stopper that the team needed him to be, as he held the Travs to just two runs on five hits over seven quality innings.

After Arkansas got a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-2, Hearne buckled down working around a lead-off single in the sixth and a lead-off walk in the seventh.

Springfield got an important insurance run against Bobby Cassevah in the eighth, as Tyler Henley led off the inning with a double, then eventually scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Matt Arburr, putting the Cards in front 4-2.

Sam Freeman worked a scoreless eighth, getting the ball to closer Francisco Samuel in the ninth.

Val Majewski led off the inning with a blast to right field, cutting the Cards' lead to one at 4-3. Samuel got Mark Trumbo on a ground ball, before allowing Wil Ortiz to reach on a single and hitting Brandon Florence with a pitch. With the tying run at second and the winning run at first, Samuel got Jay Caligiuri to ground into the game-ending 6-4-3 double-play, securing Samuel's 16th save of the year.

Springfield looks for a split in the four-game series, sending Ryan Kulik (1-4) to the mound against left-hander Trevor Reckling (3-2) on Wednesday night. Game time from Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock is 7:10pm.

The Redbirds return to Hammons Field on Thursday, opening a critical eight-game home stand, which includes the final six games of the first half. On Thursday night, the second-place Northwest Arkansas Naturals come to town, as the Cards and Naturals open a four-game series, with game time scheduled for 7:10pm on Thursday night.

On Friday, it's Great Southern Mini-Helmet Giveaway to 2,500 fans and "Symphony in the Sky", as the Springfield Symphony will perform during AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks. Tickets are available for all Cardinals' home games by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com. We hope to see you at Hammons Field...Escape to Cardinals Baseball!
