SPRINGFIELD, MO - Led by a 13-hit attack and four home runs the Springfield Cardinals picked up a 7-4 victory over the Arkansas Travelers on Tuesday night at Hammons Field. Catcher Tony Cruz led with three hits including his first home run, while centerfielder Daryl Jones also collected three base hits. Designated hitter Brian Walker accounted for most the Travs offense with a three-run homer (3), but the club managed just six base hits in losing for the fifth time in seven games at Springfield.

With their eighth loss in ten games the Travs record sits at 23-39 while the Cardinals move to 33-30.

Right hander Taylor Wilding (1-4) took the loss in his second start after allowing five runs on ten hits in 4.1 innings. Wilding struck out six batters but was tagged for a couple of home runs.

Cards third baseman Matt Carpenter fought for a two-out single in the first inning then scored when Curt Smith's drive hit the top of the fence in right-center field for a 1-0 lead.

Leading off the bottom of the second inning Springfield right fielder Aaron Luna crushed a homer to center field. Jones followed with a double down the right-field line. After a groundout moved Jones to third base he scored when Travs catcher Alberto Rosario attempted to pick him off but threw wildly into left field. Adron Chambers then yanked his second home run (4) of the series and fourth against the Travs this season for a 4-0 Cards lead.

Right hander Brian Broderick was in control for the first three innings holding the Travs to an Efren Navarro double and a walk to Andrew Romine. He stumbled in the third though giving up a walk to Jeremy Moore, a single by Julio Perez and Walker's line drive home run over the right field fence which brought the Travs within a 4-3 deficit. Alberto Rosario singled with two outs to put the tying run on base, but Broderick caught Clay Fuller looking to end the inning.

Broderick came back for the fifth inning, but left the game after striking out Andrew Romine with right shoulder pain. Right hander Jason Buursma (1-0) relieved and was perfect during a 2.2 innings stint to earn the win.

The Cardinals caught a break in the bottom of the fourth inning as Chambers hit a sinking line drive that fell just in front of Fuller in left field then bounced away for a double. He scored when Cruz hit another sinking liner that landed before Perez in right field for a 5-3 Springfield advantage.

Ismael Carmona reliever in the fifth inning, but allowed Cruz's home run on a 2-0 pitch in the sixth inning for a 6-3 lead.

Buursma retired all eight batters he faced before Blake King relieved in the eighth inning. Ivan Contreras singled with one out and was balked to second. He scored when Ryan Mount grounded a single to right field bringing the Travs within a 6-4 score. King got Moore to fly out and then finished the inning with a strikeout of Perez.

Jordan Walden was the last Trav pitcher of the night dealing 1.1 innings allowing a leadoff homer to Carpenter in the eighth inning.

Adam Reifer completed a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout for the save (4).

Time of game was 2:45 and the paid attendance numbered 6,038.

The four-game series wraps up Wednesday night at Hammons Field with Travs right hander Jeremy Thorne (2-2, 4.50) pitching against Springfield's Chuckie Fick (1-0, 2.08). First pitch will be thrown at 7:10 p.m. and the broadcast on Sports Animal 920 begins at 6:50 p.m.
