Cardinals Homers Deliver Win

Springfield, MO - After scoring 23 runs in their last four games, the Springfield Cardinals were looking to continue their recent offensive resurgence and take the upper hand in their four game series with the Arkansas Travelers.

The Cardinals offense showed up in the bottom of the 1st inning when Curt Smith hit an RBI double off the center field wall to score Matt Carpenter and change the score to a quick 1-0 lead.

The bottom of the 2nd inning provided more offense from the Cardinals when Aaron Luna hit a solo home run blast over the center field fence to bring the score to 2-0. Daryl Jones would add a run to the Cardinals lead when Travelers' catcher Alberto Rosario threw an arrant pick off attempt past 3rd base and into the outfield scoring Jones. Pitcher Taylor Wilding would allow the Cardinals offense one more run in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Adron Chambers hit the 2nd solo home run of the inning to make the score 4-0.

The Travelers found an answer against Cardinals starter Brian Broderick in the top of the 4th inning when Brian Walker hit a three run home run to cut the Cardinal lead to 4-3.

In his 2nd game with the Cardinals, Tony Cruz hit a bloop RBI single in the bottom of the 4th inning to score Adron Chambers from 2nd base and make Cardinals the lead 5-3.

Broderick would pitch into the 5th, but after striking out Andrew Romine to start the inning, Broderick was forced out of the game is pain in his pitching shoulder. Jason Buursma would take over on the mound and retire all eight batters he faced in order.

Tony Cruz took part in the array of Cardinals home runs as he blasted a solo shot in the bottom of the 6th inning off of reliever Ismael Carmona to extend the Cardinal lead to 6-3.

The Travelers would find their bats again in the top of the 8th inning after Ryan Mount hit an RBI single off of Blake King making the score 6-4. King had not allowed a run since the 16th of May.

The Cardinals added their 4th home run of the day in the bottom of the 8th inning when Matt Carpenter hit his 3rd homer of the season to bring the score to 7-4.

Adam Reifer was awarded the save in the top of the 9th inning after retiring the only three batters of the inning. The Cardinals would finish the day with 13 hits, four of which were home runs off of the Arkansas Travelers pitching staff.

Springfield will finish their four game series with Arkansas Wednesday night. In game four, Springfield will send right hander Chuckie Fick (1-0) to the mound against right hander Jeremy Thorne (2-2) for the Travelers.

To wrap up the homestand, Wednesday will be the second of four Great Southern Stan Musial Bobblehead giveaways to 2,000 fans. It will also be the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest which will be located outside the main gates with lots to do for fans of all ages. The free festival will be open three hours before game time!
