Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Koby Clemens' two-out single in the ninth scored J.B. Shuck from second base to give Corpus Christi a 6-5 triumph over San Antonio Tuesday night before 5,602.
The Hooks snapped a four-game losing streak and moved to 31-32. The Missions are 33-30.
Evan Scribner (4-5) failed to preserve a tie in regulation. With one gone, Shuck laced a single to right. He moved into scoring position on German Duran's single to left. Scribner got Jon Gaston on a called third strike before Clemens drove a 1-2 pitch up the middle.
Clemens, Shuck and Duran joined pitcher Jordan Lyles, third baseman Jhon Florentino and shortstop Wladimir Sutil as Tuesday night heroes.
Lyles pitched seven shutout innings in relief of rehabbing Chris Sampson. Lyles struck out a season-best 11 and walked three. San Antonio mustered just four hits off the 19-year-old. Sampson, an original Hook (2005), started and worked the first. He's on the Astros 15-day disabled list with biceps tendonitis.
Danny Meszaros faced six men in the ninth without retiring a batter as San Antonio climbed back from a 5-0 deficit. Mitch Canham had a two-run double in the uprising, Cedric Hunter a two-run single. Pinch-hitter Yefri Carvajal contributed an RBI single. Meszaros committed a fielding error and hit Andrew Parrino to start the frame. Jailen Peguero (1-1) withstood Sawyer Carroll's two-out double, leaving runners at second and third when he fanned Michael Collins.
Through eight, San Antonio had just one at-bat with a runner in scoring position.
Florentino grand slammed the Hooks to a 4-0 first-inning advantage. His second home run of 2010 cleared the Corpus Christi bullpen and landed beneath the scoreboard in left-center. Shuck and Gaston preceded the blast with singles and Missions starter Simon Castro struck Clemens with a pitch in the head.
Castro had Florentino down 1-2 in the count with two out but left a fastball up in the strike zone.
The 6-foot-5 right-hander went on to post four scoreless frames before giving way to Matt Buschmann. David Cook greeted him with double off the right-field wall and scored an out later on Sutil's single past a drawn-in infield.
Corpus Christi's Jeremy Johnson (1-6) meets Wynn Pelzer (6-4) at 7:05 Wednesday in the series finale.
