Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - For the second straight day, the Springfield Cardinals walked off against the Corpus Christi Hooks with RF David Washington's RBI double in the bottom of the 11th lifting the Cardinals to the 5-4 win before 2,720 fans at Hammons Field on Monday night.
Cardinals RHP Corey Baker and Hooks RHP Kyle Westwood dueled back and forth with three scoreless innings apiece to start the game. After Baker faced the minimum through his first three, the Hooks (5-6, 53-28) got the bats going in the top of the fourth. With one away, RF Brett Phillips hooked a double into right field. He then moved to second on a wild pitch, before darting home on an RBI sacrifice fly from SS Jio Mier, lifting the Hooks ahead, 1-0.
The Cardinals (6-5, 36-45) responded right away in the bottom of the fourth. LF Mike O'Neill and 3B Patrick Wisdom started the inning with consecutive singles to put two men on with no outs. 1B Jonathan Rodriguez then ripped an RBI double to right-center field, bringing home O'Neill with Wisdom stopping at third. Both Wisdom and Rodriguez raced home on a go-ahead, two-run single by 2B Bruce Caldwell, swinging the Cardinals into the 3-1 lead.
Baker closed his outing with a scoreless fifth inning, allowing just the one run on two hits while striking out three through his start.
However, the Hooks battled it back even in the top of the sixth against RHP Jordan Swagerty. With one away, CF Teoscar Hernandez started the rally with a walk. Phillips followed with a single, followed by a hit batter to load the bases. 3B Colin Moran then struck with a two-run single to tie it, 3-3.
Springfield, though, moved right back in front in the bottom of the sixth. SS Aledmys Diaz sparked the offense with a double inside the right field line. Wisdom followed with his third single of the night, moving Diaz to third base and setting up runners at the corners with no outs for Rodriguez. Rodriguez bounced into a 4-6-3 double play, but it brought Diaz in from third for the 4-3 lead.
The Hooks once again came back to square the score, evening it in the top of the seventh against LHP Iden Nazario. Nazario struck out the inning's first batter, but C Brett Booth lined a solo home run to left field for the 4-4 tie.
Nazario bounced back with a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, followed by a scoreless top of the ninth from All-Star RHP Chris Thomas (W, 2-3) to keep the Hooks at four runs.
However, Corpus Christi also received scoreless relief, as RHP Jandel Gustave dealt his second scoreless inning in the eighth, before a scoreless inning from LHP Chris Cotton in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
Thomas kept the Hooks in check with a scoreless 10th and 11th, before the Cardinals ended it against RHP Travis Ballew (L, 3-3) in the bottom of the 11th. With one down, DH Derek Gibson was hit by a pitch. After Gibson stole second base, RF David Washington crushed the game-winning RBI double to left field, scoring Gibson for the 5-4 walk-off win for the Cardinals.
