Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MO - David Washington's RBI double in the 11th inning Monday night handed the Cardinals their second last-at-bat triumph in as many nights, a 5-4 decision at Hammons Field.
Corpus Christi (5-6, 53-28) trailed 3-1 heading into the sixth. After retiring the first batter, Jordan Swagerty loaded the bases thanks to a walk, single and hit batsman. Colin Moran cashed in with a base hit up the middle to tie the game.
Kurt Heyer entered from the pen and induced a sharp line drive from Jon Kemmer which resulted in a double play to end the frame. Corpus Christi's offense accounted for a trio of twin-killings on the night.
Springfield (6-5, 36-45) reclaimed the lead in the home half. Aledmys Diaz opened with a double. Patrick Wisdom notched a single, staging runners at the corners. Hooks starter Kyle Westwood then coaxed a double play, resulting in the Cardinal's fourth run.
Brett Booth leveled the game at 4 in the seventh with his second home run in the catcher's last five games, a no-doubter down the left-field line off Iden Nazario.
Chris Thomas (2-3) kept Corpus Christi in check over the final three innings en route to the victory.
The Hooks spoiled solid outings by Jandel Gustave and Chris Cotton, who each tossed a pair of scoreless innings.
With one away in the 11th, Travis Ballew (3-3) struck Derek Gibson with a pitch. Gibson swiped second before Washington hit a 1-1 offering off the left-field fence to win the game.
Springfield starter Corey Baker limited the Hooks to two hits over the first five frames. Corpus Christi captured a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Brett Phillips smacked a double into the right-field corner and later scored via a sac fly by Jio Mier.
The Cardinals responded with four consecutive hits against Westwood to begin the home half. Jonathan Rodriguez and Bruce Caldwell imposed the damage via an RBI double and a two-run single, respectively.
The series concludes Tuesday night. Ruben Alaniz (1-0, 5.06) is slated to pitch for the Hooks. Alaniz will be opposed by Andrew Morales (3-4, 5.35). First pitch 7:10.
