Cardinals Take Series with Comeback Win

Arkansas Travelers News Release

Springfield, MO - Following his walk-off winner in Thursday night's game, 3B Paul DeJong hit another game-securing blast for the Cardinals on Friday night at Hammonds Field. An eighth inning, three-run home run by DeJong propelled the Springfield Cardinals to a come-from-behind victory, 6-4, over the Arkansas Travelers. With the win, the Cardinals took the series, three games to one.

In giving up the late homer, RHP Austin Adams (L, 0-1) took the loss for the Travs. He inherited a runner from LHP Jose Molina in the 8th inning and let up a single to 1B Luke Voit before the DeJong long ball.

The Travs held a one run lead for the majority of the game and jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the 2nd inning on a solo home run from 1B Eric Aguilera, his eighth homer of the year and his second of the series.

C Carson Kelly responded quickly to the early deficit by hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to give the Cardinals a brief 2-1 lead.

The Travs then jumped on Cardinals starter RHP Corey Baker for three more in the 3rd inning when SS Anthony Phillips scored on a error by DeJong and Aguilera scored two, LF Caleb Adams and 3B Andrew Daniel, with an RBI triple to give Arkansas a 4-2 lead. Aguilera recorded three RBIs in the game. All three runs in the inning were unearned.

The Cardinals only got one back in their half of the third when SS Juan Herrera scored from third base on a passed ball to make it 4-3. The Travelers held that lead until the eighth inning.

RHP Alex Blackford went the first five innings for the Travelers and gave up three hits and two earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts. He escaped a no outs, bases loaded jam in the third inning as the Cardinals would strand two in scoring position and Herrera became the only runner to score.

Baker went 5.1 innings and gave up eight hits. Of the four runs that scored on his watch, just one was earned. He also struck out five.

RHP Ronnie Shaban (3-0) picked up the win for Springfield recording five of the final six outs. However, he walked back-to-back batters with two outs in the ninth and RHP Kevin Herget (S, 1) entered to help get the final out of the game. The Cardinals bullpen did not give up a hit or run over the final 3.2 innings.

With the loss, Arkansas fell to 24-36 on the season. They begin an eight-game home stand from Dickey-Stephens Park on Saturday with Faith and Family Night. They'll take on the Northwest Arkansas Naturals for the first of four games. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
