Midland RockHounds News Release
RockHounds second baseman Wade Kirkland went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base in Friday night's 7-6, 10 inning win over the Corpus Christi Hooks at Whataburger Field. (Forrest Allen)
The RockHounds departed Corpus Christi, bound for Frisco, with a much lighter cargo bay on the team bus. "Missing" was the weight of a six-game losing streak, left behind after the RockHounds erased a 5-1 deficit and defeated the Hooks, 7-6, in 10 innings on Friday night.
The 'Hounds opened the scoring on Wade Kirkland's delayed steal of home in the second inning. With Kirkland at third and Franklin Barreto at first (each with a single) and two outs, Barreto broke off first base, inducing a rundown. Kirkland (see "Stat of the Day," below) broke for home and Barreto scrambled back to first without being tagged out for a 1-0 lead.
Two-run singles from Alex Bregman in the third and Alejandro Garcia in the fourth then helped give the Hooks a 5-1 lead.
Andy Paz coaxed a two-out walk on a close (3-2) pitch with the bases empty and two outs in the fifth. Brett Vertigan followed with a walk and Danny Oh brought Paz home with a single to center. Reliever Evan Grills entered the game and was greeted by a Tyler Marincov RBI single and Viosergy Rosa's two-run double to the right field corner, tying the game at 5-5 (see "eleventh-hour scoring," below).
In the 10th, former RockHound Brendan McCurry gave up a bases-empty, two-out single to Kirkland and a pair of walks (Barreto and Matt Chapman) to load the bases. Bregman's throw on Josh Rodriguez's grounder to short sailed wide, and two runs scored. Nick Tanielu led off the last of the 10th with a solo home run before Kyle Finnegan retired the next three batters, ending the game and the six-game slide.
