Bregman Drops Bomb on Missions

June 11, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Alex Bregman's 13th home run, a 407-foot solo blast to left after reliever Tayron Guerrero's first pitch of the at-bat sailed over his head, provided the difference in Corpus Christi's 5-4 triumph over San Antonio in 10 innings Saturday before 6,194.

Guerrero (0-2), on for the 10th, whiffed Alfredo Gonzalez and threw a fly ball out to Teoscar Hernandez before Bregman stepped to the plate.

Eric Peterson, who worked a perfect 10th for the Hooks, earned his third win in four decisions. Corpus Christi stands 8-1 vs. the Missions in 2016.

With Midland's 5-1 victory over second-place Frisco, Corpus Christi holds a 3 1/2 game lead over the RoughRiders with 10 to play in the Texas League South Division first-half race.

Play was suspended for 15 minutes due to rain during the top of the 10th. Total elapsed time was 3:48.

Cy Sneed had his hands full from the start as Missions lead-off man Auston Bousfield forced a 13-pitch plate appearance. Sneed got Bousfield to pop out in foul territory, but consecutive singles from River Stevens and Jose Rondon ignited a two-run rally. Both moved up on a wild pitch before Nick Torres' sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Nick Schulz.

Corpus Christi (38-22) posted a second-inning run off Aaron Northcraft with two out, Conrad Gregor's single preceding an Alejandro Garcia double to left-center.

San Antonio (19-41) took it right back, Stevens' hustling lead-off double conveying to the third score. He took third on a passed ball and crossed when Rondon bounced out.

Sneed gave way to Kyle Smith after three innings, five hits, and two walks over 71 pitches (45 strikes).

Diego Goris welcomed Smith with a homer over the left-field berm for a 4-1 Missions advantage.

The Hooks erased two runners at home during the Missions seventh behind Michael Freeman. Shortstop Bregman threw out Bousfield (walk) at the plate and second baseman Nick Tanielu nabbed Stevens on the front end of a double-steal attempt during the following at bat.

Corpus Christi's offense came back to life in the eighth. James Ramsey stroked a lead-off double to left and traveled the remaining 180 feet on wild pitches by Jimmy Brasoban. Hernandez walked, took second on one of the wild pitches, and scored when Bregman lined a single into right field.

The Hooks drew even against Missions closer Jason Jester an inning later, J.D. Davis (single/wild pitch) crossing on Garcia's one-out single. On the same play, pinch-runner Chan-Jong Moon was hung up in a rundown between third and home, ultimately retired by catcher Goris' tag.

Nick Tanielu's 13-pitch at-bat after falling behind 0-2 contributed to a 30-pitch ninth for Jester.

Lost in the late night was Northcraft's effort. Recently transferred from Triple-A El Paso, he yielded a run on two hits while fanning three. Northcraft threw just 78 pitches (50 strikes) over six innings.

Schulz reached four times on three singles and a base-on-balls.

Sunday, the first 1,500 fans take home a Hooks Dri-Fit Shirt from Hilliard Munoz Gonzales. It's also H-E-B Kids Day, so children run the bases postgame.

Left-hander Brian Holmes (4-2) takes the ball for Corpus Christi at 6:05 vs. Kyle Lloyd (2-2). Banquete's Class 3A state semifinal baseball team will be recognized in pregame ceremonies.
