Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Andrew Morales overcame a rocky start and Harrison Bader drove in two runs as Springfield defeated Corpus Christi 6-4 Sunday at Whataburger Field before 5,470.
Morales (1-0) was touched for three runs in the first two innings, but threw three blanks during the balance of his stint. He allowed three hits, walked two, and whiffed four in a 77-pitch effort.
Chase McDonald's second home run in as many games gave Brian Holmes (0-1) and the Hooks an early 2-0 boost. Alex Bregman reached on a one-out single and moved up 90 feet when Derek Fisher flew to deep center. McDonald then took Morales' 1-0 offering 356 feet over the Goodwill Zone in left field.
The Cardinals (3-1) immediately responded with three unearned runs. Bruce Caldwell dropped a one-out bunt single down the third base line and should've been erased on a muffed force play at second base. Run-producing singles from Collin Radack and Bader, plus C.J. McElroy's fielder's choice RBI after what should have been the final out, put the Cardinals up 3-2. Radack's sky-high, wind-pushed fly fell to the right-side infield dirt, scoring Caldwell.
Springfield's edge didn't last long, as Jack Mayfield clanged his first home run of 2016 off the left-field foul pole.
The visitors regained the lead at 5-3 during the fourth and chased Holmes in the process. Carson Kelly took him deep to left, and McElroy (double) came around on a Bader two-out single, which ricocheted into the outfield off the pitcher's glove.
Holmes was responsible for six hits, two earned runs, a walk, and five strikeouts over 3 2/3 and 82 pitches (53).
The first three batters reached for Springfield against Brendan McCurry in the fifth, but just one crossed. Paul DeJong opened with a lead-off single and reached home when Chris Jacobs bounced into a double play.
Corpus Christi (2-2) closed to within two in the ninth, Mayfield's two-out single plating McDonald, who'd led off and reached on an error. Cardinals closer Josh Lucas was called on to face Mott Hyde and recorded a strikeout to strand two.
Hooks reliever Cy Sneed struck out five in four scoreless innings of his Double-A debut.
Lance McCullers pitches Monday for the Hooks on a rehab assignment from Houston. His opposition is Corey Baker. Fans enjoy $1 Hot Dogs & Soda from Mrs Baird's.
