San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio's late rally fell short in a season-opening 3-1 loss to Springfield Thursday night before 5,807 at Wolff Stadium.

Fabio Castillo got the ball Thursday for the Missions in his organizational debut. The right-hander had a solid night on the hill, allowing just three runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out six over six innings. However, Castillo (0-1) could not solve Springfield second baseman Bruce Caldwell, who opened scoring in the second with a two-run single up the middle. Three innings later, Caldwell pushed the Cardinals' lead to 3-0 with a solo homer to right.

After tripling off reliever Ramon Benjamin in the top of the seventh, Caldwell had his chance at a cycle in the eighth. However, Caldwell was denied the feat, settling for a walk.

Caldwell's offense was more than enough for winning starter Mike Mayers (1-0), who tossed seven shutout innings of three-hit ball. Reliever John Brebbia kept the Missions off the board in the eighth, but Kurt Heyer ran into a little trouble in the bottom of the ninth.

Jose Rondon got the rally started with a one-out single to right, the shortstop's second hit of the night. After Heyer induced an Auston Bousfield groundout, Yeison Asencio kept San Antonio alive, and spoiled the shutout, with a triple down the right-field line. Nick Torres, making his Double-A debut, worked a walk to put the tying run on base. Unfortunately for the Missions, Heyer (1st save) ended the comeback attempt by fanning Diego Goris.

San Antonio (0-1) resumes its season-opening, six-game homestand Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. The first 1,500 fans to enter Wolff Stadium will receive a free Missions Thermal Mug courtesy of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Bryan Rodriguez (0-0, 0.00) will get the ball for San Antonio, while Springfield (1-0) counters with fellow righty Trey Nielsen (Double-A debut).
