Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Tulsa Drillers produced a season high eight hits Sunday afternoon in San Antonio, but the result on the scoreboard was the same. For the third time in four games this season, the Drillers were shutout as the Missions posted a 3-0 win.
Tulsa has scored a total of two runs in its first four games this season, with both coming during a 2-1 win over Corpus Christi Friday night. The loss to the Missions leaves the Drillers with a 1-3 record on the young season.
Errors played a big role in Sunday's loss, as all three runs from the Missions were unearned.
The first miscue came early when Tulsa starting pitcher Scott Barlow misplayed a slow roller off the bat of leadoff man Nelson Ward in the top of the first inning. Ward reached safely on the error and moved to third after a hit batter and a double steal. He came home with the game's first run on a sacrifice fly from Yeison Asencio.
A leadoff error in the fourth led to the second run. Taylor Lindsey opened the inning with a fly ball that centerfielder Alex Verdugo misplayed into a two-base error. Following a wild pitch from Barlow, Lindsey scored on a groundout from Gabriel Quintana to make it 2-0.
The lead for the Missions increased to three runs in the fifth as Rocky Gale led off with a base hit off Barlow. With one out, Gale moved all the way to third on a wild pitch and a throwing error by catcher Tyler Ogle. He scored the third run when Nelson Ward followed with a base hit.
The Drillers best chance to get on the scoreboard came in the top of the ninth. They loaded the bases with one out on three straight singles from Adam Law, Willie Calhoun and Jacob Scavuzzo, but the threat ended as Verdugo and Ogle both went down on strikes to end the game.
Scavuzzo, Law and Brandon Trinkwon combined to account for six of Tulsa's eight hits as each finished with two.
Rob Rogers worked two perfect innings in relief of Barlow, and Logan Bawcom followed with a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth as Drillers pitchers combined to set down 11 San Antonio hitters in a row to close out the game.
Tulsa will continue its season-opening road trip Monday night in San Antonio. Seth Frankoff will take the mound for the Drillers in his first start of the season, while former Arkansas Travelers right-hander Johnny Hellweg will make the start for the Missions. Starting time in San Antonio is scheduled for 7:05PM.
