San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio rode the right arm of Luis Diaz to a 3-0 victory over Tulsa in Sunday afternoon's series opener before a season-high crowd of 6,563 at Wolff Stadium.
Following a tough loss in Saturday's series finale vs. Springfield, the Missions needed a spark to bounce back against the Drillers. They found one in Diaz (1-0), who in his first start with the club, tossed a gem. A day after turning 24, Diaz limited Tulsa to just four hits and one walk, while fanning three over seven shutout innings. The Valencia, Venezuela native needed just 76 pitches (49 strikes) to get through his day.
Diaz's mound opponent, Scott Barlow, pitched well himself, but was victim to some key miscues in the field, including one of his own. In the bottom of the first, Barlow misplayed a slow roller off the bat of leadoff man, Nelson Ward. Three batters later, Yeison Asencio scored Ward on a sacrifice fly.
In the fourth, Taylor Lindsey would reach on an error by center fielder Alex Verdugo. Later in the frame, Gabriel Quintana gave the Missions a 2-0 lead when he scored Lindsey from third on a groundout. San Antonio capped scoring in the fifth with a single to right by Ward, who stole three of the team's season-high five bases. None of the three runs charged to Barlow (0-1) were earned.
The bullpen duo of Eric Yardley and Jason Jester preserved San Antonio's first shutout of 2016 with zeroes in the eighth and ninth, respectively. Jester worked out of a bases-loaded jam for his second save.
San Antonio (2-2) resumes its three-game series with Tulsa (1-3) Monday night at 7:05 PM. Monday will be the season's first H-E-B Family Night with fans being able to purchase four box seats for just $24 at the Missions' box office with an H-E-B receipt. Johnny Hellweg (0-0, 0.00) gets the call for San Antonio, while Tulsa counters with fellow righty Seth Frankoff (0-0, 0.00).
