Springfield Cardinals News Release

Little Rock, AR - Springfield used a two-run, bloop single by Jose Garcia in the 10th inning to outlast the Arkansas Travelers in game one of their three game set at Dickey-Stephens Park.

The Cardinals jumped out in front in the 2nd inning as Jamie Romak slugged a solo homer to left field, his 7th of the year, to take a 1-0 lead. They'd add three more in the 3rd on a two-run triple by Oscar Taveras and a sac-fly by Romak to take a 4-0 lead.

Seth Maness cruised for the two innings, but ran into trouble in the 3rd. With the bases loaded on a two hits and a hit batter, Renny Osuna drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Paul McAnulty followed with a two-out, three-run homer to tie the game 4-4.

In the 5th, the Travs took a three run advantage as five straight batter reached against Maness and scored on an RBI single by Osuna and a bloop two-run double down the right field line to grab a 7-4 lead. Maness would leave the game after the 5th allowing a season high seven runs on nine hits.

Springfield cut the deficit to just a run on Greg Garcia's two run homer in the 6th and ended the night for starter Orangel Arenas with the score 7-6.

Arkansas added a big insurance run in the 6th as Darwin Perez lifted a solo homer to right off reliever Scott Gorgen to make it 8-6. Gorgen allowed just the one run on one hit in 2.2 innings of work with five strikeouts and Eric Fornataro got the final out in the 8th.

The Cardinals got within a run again in the 8th as they strung together three straight singles including an RBI hit by Audry Perez to bring the game to an 8-7 score.

Springfield had won just one game when trailing after eight innings and they would not be deterred Tuesday night. They would score two 9th inning runs on a bases loaded fielder's choice from Xavier Scruggs and go ahead with Greg Garcia's RBI single to grab a 9-8 lead.

In the bottom of the 9th, Jorge Rondon came in to try and save the game, but allowed a lead-off double on his first pitch and then chucked two wild pitches on his next two to force home the tying run. The Travs did not score again in the inning.

In the 10th, Adam Melker singled and moved to third on Jermaine Curtis' single with one out. After an intentional walk, Jose Garcia, who had come in to run in the 9th, blooped a single into shallow right field to score two to take an 11-9 lead.

Keith Butler, coming off his first blown save of the year Monday, allowed just a two out single before retiring Travis Witherspoon on a groundout to end the game.

Springfield will continue their three game series with the Arkansas Travelers Wednesday night at 7:10pm. The Cardinals will have Scott McGregor on the mound against Matt Oye of the Travelers.

The Cardinals will return home Friday, August 3rd to play a four-game series with the Tulsa Drillers. Every Friday is a Firework Friday night thanks to AM Pyrotechnics!
