Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER - The Tornadoes used a Francisco Caraballo first-inning home run to jump out to an early lead and the Worcester pitching staff held strong the rest of the way for the convincing 4-1 win over the Nashua Pride in front of a second-straight sellout crowd at Hanover Insurance Park on Saturday evening.

Caraballo finished 1-for-4 with his 11th long ball of the season which tied him for second most in the league. Scott Grimes (3-for-4), Chris Colabello (2-for-3), and Mike MacMillan (2-for-3) combined for seven of the team's nine hits. Tom Cochran labored in the early innings, but still pitched seven strong frames giving up only one (earned) run on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts. After giving up two hits in the first inning, he didn't allow another until the sixth. The win was his 10th of the season to extend his already league-leading total. Eddie Pena pitched the final two innings for his third save of the season.

For the second-straight night, Nashua scored a single run in the first inning to put the Tornadoes into the early 1-0 hole. Vinny Pennell led off with an infield single, stole second, and advanced to third on a Jeremy Pickrel single. With Bryan Duplissie batting, Pennell took off for the plate when Cochran threw to first, beating the ensuing throw from Colabello for the rare steal of home.

Caraballo erased the deficit and gave Worcester a two-run advantage with a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning, scoring Grimes and Colaballo for the 3-1 lead.

The pitchers dominated the middle innings before the Tornadoes manufactured a run in the eighth. Colabello hit a two-out double to right field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He then crossed the plate when catcher Alex Trezza laid down a perfect bunt, beating out the infield single to make it 4-1 in favor of Worcester.

The series will move to Nashua for the finale on Sunday with Matt Weagle looking for his ninth win of the season. He will be opposed by Hideki Nagasaka. The Tornadoes return home on Sunday, Aug. 3 to begin an eight-game homestand. The third is Tykes Club Sunday and Monday is another Guaranteed Win Night while Tuesday is Mouse Pad Giveaway!
