Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA - The Brockton Rox pushed its winning streak to a season-high seven games on Saturday night with a 5-4 win over the Sussex Skyhawks at Skylands Park in Augusta, NJ. Brockton took a 5-1 lead into the ninth inning and a furious Skyhawks' rally ended when RHP Jerry Dunn struck out RF Jorge Moreno with the tying run at third base.
The Rox were led by starter RHP Wayne Lundgren who picked up his team-leading sixth victory of the season and departed with one out in the ninth inning. Lundgren allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and struck out six batters in the game. He did not face more than five batters in an inning, and appeared to get stronger as the game progressed, retiring the side in order in the seventh and eighth innings.
Brockton scored three runs in the third inning to jump out early against Sussex starter RHP Gary Galvez. DH Jason Colson picked up his sixth RBI of the series with a run-scoring double and was followed by a sacrifice fly by RF Jud Thigpen, and an RBI single by 1B Francisco Lebron. 3B Phillip Cuadrado added a run with an RBI double in the sixth inning, and 2B Melvin Falu drove in the Rox fifth run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
LF Dennis Abreu extended his hitting streak to 25 games with a single in the fourth inning; a hit which was nearly taken away by a hustling RF Jorge Moreno who slid to get a glove on Abreu's flare to right field.
Lundgren left runners at the corners with one out in the ninth inning and Manager Chris Miyake summoned Dunn from the bullpen to get the final two outs. Sussex scored three runs on three hits off of Dunn and had the tying run at third base when the game ended. Dunn's save was his 15th of the season, tying for the league lead and also tying for second place in the Rox all-time record books for career saves. Abreu's hitting streak is two games shy of the league record set by former Rox 3B Jake Daubert who hit safely in 27 consecutive games in 2005.
The Rox and Skyhawks finish the three-game series on Sunday afternoon as the Rox look to extend its winning streak to eight games. RHP Stevie Delabar (3-2, 2.40 ERA) will face Sussex RHP Justin Knoff (1-0, 0.00 ERA). Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
