(Worcester, MA) Tornadoes starting pitcher Tom Cochran (10-0) remained undefeated and earned his league leading tenth victory of the season, en route to a 4-1 Worcester win over the Nashua Pride at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field on Saturday night.
Cochran went seven innings, giving up one run, on five hits, three walks and four strike outs. Reliever Eddie Pena was the lone man out of the bullpen for Worcester, earning his third save of the season on two innings of shut-out work.
Pride starter Jason Paul (3-2) suffered the loss, going the full eight innings, giving up four runs, on nine hits, one walks and six strike outs.
Worcester designated hitter Francisco Caraballo led the Tornadoes at the plate, finishing the game 1-for-4, with the game deciding three-run home run in the first inning. Worcester catcher Alex Trezza added an insurance run in the eighth inning, plating first baseman Chris Colabello with a squeeze bunt. Trezza finished the game 1-for-4 with a RBI, while Colabello went 2-for-3 with a double. Right fielder Scott Grimes finished his night 3-for-4 with a double.
The Pride scored its only run of the game on left fielder Vinny Pennell's steal of home in he first inning. Pennell took the plate when Cochran threw to first base to check Pride base runner Jeremy Pickrel, sliding in safely and notching his second steal of the inning. Pennell finished the game 1-for-3. Catcher Mike Torres and Pickrel went 2-for-4, each with doubles.
The Pride and Tornadoes will meet again on Sunday afternoon, at 5:05pm, at Historic Holman Stadium when Nashua sends Hideki Nagasaka (6-3) to the mound. Matt Weagle (8-3) will get the start for Worcester.
