Atlantic City, N.J. - SS Anthony Granato, C Joe Burke and RF Josh Burrus each went 3-for-5 as the Atlantic City Surf defeated the Quebec Capitales, 8-2, in a Can-Am League game at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Saturday evening. The victory marked the sixth consecutive win for Atlantic City; the team also won six in a row from July 10-16.
The Surf (9-3) set the tone early with a pair of runs in the first inning. With one out and 2B Brad Thoma on third and Burke on first, DH Clyde Williams singled to left, bringing home Thoma; an error by Quebec LF Issael Gonzalez also allowed Burke to score.
The Capitales (7-5) halved the Surf lead in the fourth on C Greg Stevens' RBI single, and tied the game at two in the fifth on 3B Patrick Deschenes' sacrifice fly.
The lead wouldn't last for long, as Atlantic City responded with six unanswered runs to put the game out of reach. In their half of the fifth, with the bases loaded and none out, Granato came home when Williams grounded into a double play. Burrus then peeled an RBI single into center, and 1B Eddie Kim brought him home with an RBI double of his own, increasing the Surf lead to 5-2.
In the seventh, Atlantic City added to its lead on Burrus' two-run home run to left, his team-leading eighth of the season. The following inning, Burke doubled down the right-field line, bringing home Granato, making it an 8-2 game.
Surf starter Rory Shortell (4-2), who delivered his second consecutive solid outing, limited the powerful Capitales' offense to two runs on nine hits in seven innings of work, striking out three. Kyle George followed up with two scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 1.40. In his second start with Quebec, Chris Begg (0-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on ten this in four and two-thirds innings.
