Rox hold on in 5-4 win over Sussex

AUGUSTA, N.J. - Brockton starter Wayne Lundgren scattered seven hits and two earned runs over 8.1 innings, but the Rox had to fend off a furious comeback attempt by Sussex in the bottom of the ninth to hold on to a 5-4 win over the Skyhawks on Saturday evening at Skylands Park.
Lundgren (6-2) walked two and struck out six to pick up his sixth win of the season. Lundgren got in some trouble early in the ninth and, after picking up one out gave way to reliever Jerry Dunn. Sussex pushed three runs across in the inning but with the tying run on third and the winning run on first, Dunn picked up a strike out to seal the game.
Gary Galvez (2-4) was tagged with the loss for Sussex, after giving up five runs (four earned) in 6.2 innings.
Brockton third baseman Philip Cuadrado continued to scorch the Skyhawks. After going three for five with three RBI in Brockton's win on Friday night, Cuadrado had a three for four, RBI - night in his encore performance on Saturday.
Brockton (8-3) got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning when designated hitter Jason Colson stroked an RBI double. Jud Thigpen then lofted a sacrifice fly to center to make it a 2-0 game. Francisco Lebron followed with a single, scoring Colson to give Brockton a 3-0 lead. Brockton added another run in the top of the sixth to make it a 4-0 game.
The Skyhawks (3-8) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Matt Weston launched a solo home run to right field to cut the Brockton lead to 4-1. Weston also smacked a double in the ninth to finish the night two for three with two runs scored.
The teams return to Skylands Park on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the final game of the three game set. Sunday is Dog Day at the ballpark. Bring your dog to the game, he pays and you get in free. After the game, there will be an Applebees Kids Run the Bases promotion.
