Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. - A ninth-inning rally fell short and the Greensboro Grasshoppers lost to the Lake County Captains 5-4 Saturday night to open a four-game series.
The Hoppers fell behind 5-0 before finally getting on the board in the sixth inning. Greg Burns got an infield single, Greensboro's first hit of the game, and scored on a double by Agustin Septimo.
Against Matt Davis, the Captains' fourth pitcher of the night, the Hoppers made it close in the ninth. Gaby Sanchez was hit by a pitch - he also drew three walks - and Andy Jenkins walked. Brett Hayes followed with his second homer of the season, a three-run shot, to pull the Hoppers within a run.
Lake County shortstop Niuman Romero made a fine stop on a ball hit up the middle by Jon Fulton and his throw nipped Fulton at first. Greg Burns took a called third strike to end the game.
Lake County starter Tom Cowley, on a low pitch count, threw four hitless innings, allowing only a walk to Sanchez. He was followed by Michael Finnochi, Dustin Roddy and Davis. Finnochi (4-0) got the win.
Ryan Tucker (1-5) took the loss, failing to get out of the fifth inning. James Galbizo pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief, allowing one run.
Matt Fornasiere had two hits and two RBIs for the Captains and Jose Constanza added two hits. Mike Conroy hit his fifth homer, a solo shot in the sixth inning off Galbizo, that eventually proved to be the deciding run.
A crowd of 8,841, the third-largest of the season, was on hand.
The teams meet again Sunday at First Horizon at 5 p.m.
