Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive had a rough time, committing five errors Saturday night in front of the sellout crowd at West End Field as they lost the first game of the series with the Augusta GreenJackets, 5-3. The loss dropped the Drive to 24-25 while the win improved the GreenJackets to 26-21.
The Drive jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Dustin Kelly reached on a fielding error with the bases loaded, scoring Mark Wagner. Wagner, Mike Leonard, and Logan Sorensen got Greenville off to a great start in the inning with three straight singles.
Augusta would answer right back with two runs in the top of the third to overtake the Drive. Antoan Richardson led off the inning with a double to center field and advanced to third on Ben Copeland's single. Anthony Contreras then collected two RBIs when he lined a single to center off Greenville starter Michael Bowden.
Another run in the top half of the fourth would extend the GreenJackets lead to 3-1. David Maroul reached with one-out on a fielding error by third baseman Dustin Kelly. Jose Yens and Richardson then hit back-to-back singles with Maroul scoring on Richardson's hit.
Greenville would tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth thanks to right fielder Bubba Bell. Jay Johnson hit a one-out double to left center and Bell followed with a homer off GreenJackets starter Ryan Shaver. The home run was Bell's third of the season.
After pitching two scoreless innings in relief, Tim Cox (2-3) ran into trouble and in the top of the eighth and gave up two runs to give Augusta a 5-3 lead that they would not relinquish. With two on and one out, Copeland smacked a triple to right field, scoring Richardson and Yens. Cox then gave way to Kyle Fernandes who closed out the inning.
GreenJackets' reliever Bryan Milikan held the Drive in check in the seventh and eighth innings, allowing two hits and no runs, before Wayne Foltin relieved him in the ninth. Foltin sent the Drive packing in order to earn his fifth save in six opportunities.
The Drive and GreenJackets continue their four-game series Sunday night at West End Field with first pitch set for 7:05 PM, with a Patriotic Fireworks display at the conclusion of the game. Greenville will send right-hander Kevin Guyette to the mound as Augusta will counter with right-hander Ronnie Ray.
